Norwegian roundup

The Norwegian Nøgne ø brewers have ad problems keeping up with demand lately, and they have given priority to their premium strength beers. This means that their supermarket strength beers have not been available in my parts since before Christmas. They turned up again this week, so I decided to try them out, alnog with the stonger Porter from Haandbryggeriet.

The Brown Ale has a nice smell of roasted malts. It is quite aromatic, with a liberal use of hops. I think they have improved this beer lately. This could easily be my new everyday staple beer! The Bitter is a very fine pastiche of an English bitter. Close you eyes, and you are in a back street London pub. This should be on offer in every pub in Norway that claims to be English! The Havre (Oat) Stout is also rather good. A taste of burned toast as it should be, and a slightly bitter finish. A decent beer - try it if you can find it!

It is a bit unfair to line up a stonger Porter along with those, but this is not excactly scientific notes anyway! Some burned toast here, too. It feels a little thin for a porter to start with, but then the full flavour kicks in to show a serious beer. A great finish leaves you wanting more. Still, a bit too lightweight to becoome my favourite porter.

Jacobs at Holtet had those brews, as well as some bottles of 2005 "Julesnadder" (the supermarket strength Christmas brew) left, when I was there last week.

It does seem to me that there is some variation (from 'quite all right' to 'excellent', I hasten to add) between different batches of the same brand from Nøgne Ø, but of course, that is one of the things that shows that it for them is a question of craftmanship, rather than industry.

Per

Concering Nøgne Ø, I was a bit disappointed when I visited the Oslo City Vinmonopol and the beer shelf there. They have some new system with small notices telling what's new (good thing, this) and what is sold out. They did also, however, say that God Påske was sold out. This was a bit disappointing, because I hadn't seen it yet.

Well, as Knut Albert pointed out, in this case what they probably meant was that the 2005 version was sold out, and that a 2006 version was still to come.

Well, I guess that it will appear with the April news at the government stores. Or do some of the Nøgne Ø fans here have some information?

God Påske from NØ is on they're way to a state monopoly near you right now. They will be on sale late March or early April. But don’t wait to long, some rumors tells that the state monopoly has only ordered the half amount of what they ordered last year.
